Child Safeguarding at HIS

Introduction:


Hsinchu International School (HIS) is committed to providing a secure and nurturing environment for all students. Our Child Safeguarding Policy is developed in accordance with child protection laws in Taiwan, drawing on best practices from global standards, including those established in the United Kingdom. This policy is designed to uphold the principles outlined in the school philosophy, emphasizing the importance of a warm, secure atmosphere and the development of well-rounded personalities.

Reporting Protocol:

  • HIS adheres to a robust safeguarding reporting protocol.
  • Employees who suspect any form of child abuse, whether physical, emotional, or mental, are obligated to report it immediately to their supervisor, counselor, or divisional principal.
  • Any member of the HIS community, including students, parents, or staff, may report suspected abuse to any HIS employee or directly to the Taiwan authorities.
  • With the involvement of the Head of School, the Compliance and Regulatory Manager will report suspected incidents of abuse or neglect to the relevant authorities as required: 

  • Center for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault at Department of Social Affairs
  • Taiwan Ministry of Education 
  • Taiwan Ministry of Health and Welfare

Confidentiality and Protection:

  • All reports will be treated with the utmost confidentiality, with information shared only on a need-to-know basis.
  • The identity of the reporter will be protected to the extent allowed by law.
  • HIS is committed to supporting and protecting the well-being of both the reporting party and the child involved.

Suicide Prevention:

  • HIS recognizes the significance of mental health in child well-being and has a comprehensive Suicide Prevention Policy.
  • The policy outlines procedures to identify, address, and prevent mental health issues.
  • It includes measures to assess suicide risk, intervene in cases of potential suicide, and respond appropriately after a suicide has occurred.
  • Employees are trained to recognize signs of distress and are equipped to provide timely and effective support.

Bullying/Harassment Policy:

  • HIS has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying and harassment.
  • Students, staff, and parents are educated on recognizing and preventing bullying behavior.
  • Any incidents of bullying or harassment should be reported immediately to the appropriate school personnel.
  • HIS will promptly investigate all reports and take appropriate action, including disciplinary measures and support for the victim.

Non-Discrimination Policy:

  • HIS upholds a strict non-discrimination policy.
  • All members of the HIS community are treated with respect and dignity regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin.
  • Discrimination in any form, including but not limited to exclusion, harassment, or disparate treatment, will not be tolerated.

Social Media Guidelines:

  • HIS recognizes the impact of social media on the school community.
  • Employees are expected to maintain professionalism on social media platforms, and refrain from sharing inappropriate content or engaging in harmful interactions.
  • Students are educated on responsible social media use, and promoting positive and respectful online behavior.
  • Any instances of cyberbullying or inappropriate online behavior will be addressed through the school's disciplinary procedures.

Training and Awareness:

  • HIS provides regular training to employees on child safeguarding, including recognizing signs of abuse and responding appropriately.
  • The school promotes awareness and education on child protection issues among students, parents, and staff.


Review and Improvement:

  • This policy will be regularly reviewed and updated to align with evolving best practices and legal requirements.
  • Feedback from the HIS community is actively sought and considered in policy enhancements.
